カントリーミュージックといえばナッシュビル。2017年、僕がナッシュビルに行った理由の1つはGrand Ole Opryを見るためでした。
僕には歌声を聞いただけで涙が出そうになるシンガーが何人かいますが、その最もたる存在がハンク・ウィリアムズ。涙が出ると言っても、どっちかと言うと僕は感傷的な人間ではないので、普通に悲しいわけでは全くなく、この不思議な感情を表現する適切な日本語が見当たらないですが、英語で言うと「ロンサム」？。その辺りのことはアメリカ人に聞いてみたいです、、
ハンク・ウィリアムズが初めてGrand Ole Opryのステージに立ったのは1949年。当時、会場だったライマン公会堂はダウンタウンにあり、朝イチ、ダウンタウン内をジョギングした際に立ち寄りました。ブルーグラスの父、ビルモンローの像があります。
ハンクの生涯を描いた映画「I saw the light」でもOpryのシーンが出てきますが、カントリーミュージックが好きな人にとっては神聖な場所の1つです。ハンクは極度のアルコール依存症で破滅型な人生を選びますが、映画でもそのあたりが残酷に描かれます。
現在の会場はダウンタウンから車で20分くらいかかるOPRY HOUSEですが、全米に放送されるラジオ収録なのでしっかりとタイムテーブルが組まれ、入れ替わり立ち替わり演奏者が登場します。この日はマウンテンミュージックスタイルのバンジョー奏者でコメディアンのMike Sniderが登場しました。大きな会場ですが、客席のほとんどは年配の人で、後日、アメリカ人のサウンドエンジニアに「Opryに行ってきた!」と伝えると、渋い顔をしながら「年寄りが行く場所だよ」と苦笑いされました。まあ、そうでしょうね、、、

Hank Williams first stepped onto the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in 1949. At that time, the venue was Ryman Auditorium downtown, where I stopped by during my morning jog. There’s a statue of Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass, there.
Even in the movie “I Saw the Light,” which depicts Hank’s life, there are scenes at the Opry. For those who love country music, it’s one of the sacred places. Hank chose a self-destructive life due to severe alcoholism, and this aspect is depicted brutally in the movie.
The current venue, OPRY HOUSE, is about a 20-minute drive from downtown. Since it’s a radio broadcast aired nationwide, a strict timetable is set, and performers come and go. On this day, Mike Snider, a banjo player and comedian in the mountain music style, appeared. Although it’s a large venue, most of the audience is elderly. When I told an American sound engineer, “I went to the Opry!” he gave a wry smile and said, “That’s where old folks go,” with a bitter smile. Well, I guess so…
