大好きなカントリーシンガー、ジョニー・キャッシュ。僕のスマートフォンケースは長らくジョニーキャッシュですが、中指を立てたこの有名な写真。写真を撮ろうとアメリカ人にスマフォを向けると大体、笑ってくれます。(幸いにも、今まで怒られたことはありません、、、)
彼のキャリアのスタートはメンフィスのサンスタジオ(以前、訪れた時の思い出をこのblogにも書きました )ですが、以降、膨大なディスコグラフィーを残しています。その中でとても好きなのが「ライブ・アット・フォルサム・プリズン」。刑務所慰安コンサートを収録したライブアルバムで、ここぞとばかりジョニー・キャッシュは「コカイン・ブルース」をシャウトします。これがなかなかの歌詞で、受刑者は歓声をあげ大盛り。会場の生々しい風景が目に浮かぶ名盤です。

僕はライブアルバムを聞くのが大好きですが、数あるライブアルバムの中で「ライブ・アット・フォルサム・プリズン」は特に好きな1枚。途中から妻のジューン・カーター(カントリー好きならご存じのカーターファミリーのメンバー)が参加し、オシドリ夫婦な風情も最高です。(ジョーカー！)ホアキン・フェニックス主演の映画「ウォーク・ザ・ライン」でも、二人が掛け合う姿が登場します。
2017年、僕は、ずっと行きたかったナッシュビルにあるジョニー キャッシュミュージアムに行きました。
丁度、ボブ・ディランが1969年にリリースしたカントリーアルバム「ナッシュビル・スカイライン」にジョニー・キャッシュがゲスト参加したことをテーマにした「ディラン＋キャッシュ / ニューヨーク・ミーツ・ナッシュビル」と題された展示が行われていました。

ジョニー・キャッシは、晩年、リック・ルービンと組んで「American Recordings」シリーズを展開します。色んなカバーにも取り組んでいますが、ビートルズ、サイモン・アンド・ガーファンクル、イーグルスなどのクラシックな楽曲に加え、ナイン・インチ・ネイルズやディペッシュモードといった、ジョニー・キャッシュからしたらずっと下の世代のゴシックな要素を持ったアーティストの楽曲にも取り組んでいます。緊張感あふれる生々しい録音で、やがて彼に訪れる「死」と対峙してるようにも聞こえ、一部のアメリカーナ、特に南部音楽が持つディープで、ダークで、ゴシックな世界間が見え隠れする名盤です。僕は「優れた演奏をいい音で録る」といった一般的によしとされるレコーディングじゃなく、それらを超えた「何か」を捕えた作品に惹かれ、それこそが優れたレコーディングだと思ってるので、リリース当時、何度も何度も聞いた素晴らしい作品です。

In the realm of country music, there’s hardly a name as iconic as Johnny Cash. My smartphone case has been adorned with Cash’s image, particularly the famous one where he defiantly raises his middle finger. Whenever I aim my phone at someone in the States for a photo, they usually chuckle. (Luckily, I’ve never been scolded for it…)
His career kicked off at the Sun Studio in Memphis (which I’ve fondly reminisced about in this blog before), but he went on to build an extensive discography. One of my favorites among his works is “At Folsom Prison,” a live album recorded at a prison concert where Cash belts out “Cocaine Blues” with gusto. The gritty atmosphere of the venue and the inmates’ enthusiastic response make it a standout album.

I love listening to live albums, and “At Folsom Prison” holds a special place in my heart among the many live recordings out there. The addition of his wife, June Carter (of Carter Family fame, for all you country buffs out there), midway through adds an extra charm to the whole affair. (Joker!) You can even catch glimpses of their banter in the Joaquin Phoenix-led film “Walk the Line.”
In 2017, I finally made the pilgrimage to the Johnny Cash Museum in Nashville, a place I had longed to visit.
They had an exhibit titled “Dylan + Cash / New York Meets Nashville,” centered around Bob Dylan’s 1969 country album “Nashville Skyline,” which featured Johnny Cash as a guest.
One of the tracks featured on this album is “Girl from the North Country,” performed by Dylan and Johnny Cash. I’ve even covered it myself, recorded with a vintage Ampex 601 open reel recorder and an AEA ribbon mic. Give it a listen!
In his later years, Johnny Cash collaborated with Rick Rubin on the “American Recordings” series. While he tackled various covers, including classics from The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Eagles, he also delved into songs by artists from a much younger generation, like Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode. The resulting recordings are raw and intense, almost as if he’s confronting his own mortality, embodying the deep, dark, gothic essence often found in Americana, especially Southern music. I’ve always been drawn to recordings that capture more than just technical prowess but something deeper, and this album is a prime example. I listened to it over and over again upon its release, recognizing it as a truly remarkable piece of work.
