2018年の夏、僕は車でバーバンクから丘を登り、ハリウッドサインを間近にクネクネ曲がる坂を降り、Capitol Records Buildingを左に見ながら
Sunset Blvd〜Santa Monica Blvdを直進。目指す先は La Cienega BlvdとSanta Monica Blvdの交差点。付近にはThe Doorsゆかりの場所がいくつかあります。
※ハリウッドサイン〜グリフィス天文台で思い出すのは、ヴィム・ヴェンダースの映画「エンド・オブ・バイオレンス。このサントラも大好きです。
車を駐車して、まずはThe Doors’ Officesがあった場所へ。アルバム「L.A. Women」をレコーディングしミックスした場所でもあります。
次は「モリソンホテル」や「ソフトパレード」をレコーディングしたElektra Sound Recorders Studioだったとこへ。
次はジムモリソンが1968年から1970年の間に住んでたアルタ シエネガ モーテルのRoom32。多くのドアーズファンが訪れる場所です。
次はBARNEY’S BEANERYへ。ここはジムモリソンがよく訪れていたバー/レストラン。夕食時だったので、僕はハンバーガーとビールを頼んだ記憶があります。マリリンモンロー、ジャック・ニコルソン、マーロン・ブランド、ジャニス・ジョプリンなども常連だったそうです。
「グリンプス」というロックファンには知られたタイムスリップSFがありますが、この中で、主人公はドアーズ幻のサードアルバム「セレブレーション・オブ・ザ・リザード」のレコーディングに立ち合います。また、ビーチボーイズ 「スマイル」の制作時、苦悩するブライアンウィルソンも登場するので、古いロックが好きな人にはオススメです。
最後はもちろんウィスキー・ア・ゴーゴーへ。ドアーズは一時期、専属バンドを務めていました。
ドアーズの映画といえば、オリバー・ストーンが撮っていますね。
この映画でベニス運河のシーンがありますが、翌日、ヴェニスビーチにも足を運びました。
僕は、今ではブルーステイストを感じる「モリソン・ホテル」を聞くことが多くなりました。

In the summer of 2018, I drove up the hills from Burbank, winding down the streets near the Hollywood sign, keeping the Capitol Records Building to my left, turning onto Sunset Blvd, then proceeding straight on to Santa Monica Blvd.
My destination was the intersection of La Cienega Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd. In the vicinity, there are several places associated with The Doors.
I parked my car and first visited the location of The Doors’ Offices, where they recorded and mixed the album “L.A. Woman.”
Next, I went to Elektra Sound Recorders Studio, where they recorded “Morrison Hotel” and “The Soft Parade.”
Then, I visited Room 32 of the Alta Cienega Motel, where Jim Morrison lived between 1968 and 1970. It’s a popular spot for many Doors fans.
After that, I went to BARNEY’S BEANERY, a bar/restaurant frequented by Jim Morrison. I remember ordering a hamburger and a beer for dinner. Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando, and Janis Joplin were also regulars.
There’s a well-known time-traveling SF novel called “Glimpses,” where the protagonist witnesses the recording of The Doors’ mythical third album, “Celebration of the Lizard.” It’s recommended for fans of old rock, as it also features Brian Wilson’s struggles during the production of The Beach Boys’ “Smile.”
Finally, I visited the Whisky a Go Go, where The Doors served as the house band for a while.
Speaking of The Doors’ movies, Oliver Stone directed one. There’s a scene in the movie featuring the Venice Canals, so the next day, I went to Venice Beach.
These days, I find myself often listening to “Morrison Hotel,” which carries a bluesy vibe.
