2017年の夏、僕はナッシュビルから車で南下。途中、スピード違反してパトカーに停められ、「Put your hands on the car!」的なことはなかったですが、下車させられ、警官にかなり怒られもしましたが、、、2時間半ほどで着いたサザン・ソウル、スワンプ・ロックの聖地、アメリカ南部、アラバマ州マッスルショールズ。
小さな街です。田舎です。
まずは聖地の一つ、FAMEスタジオへ。異国の地だし、GPSがあってもウロウロ迷うことが多いんですが、ハイウェイ72号線を車で走っていると、分かりやすく建物が目に入ってきたので、すんなり到着。スタジオ内部を見学することができました。
自分を盛り上げるために行きの飛行機の中で見た、FAMEスタジオとオーナーのリック・ホールの歴史を描いたドキュメンタリー「黄金のメロディ マッスル・ショールズ」はかなり面白いです。
アメリカの昔の独立系スタジオ あるあるですが、今では「伝説的スタジオ」と呼ばれる場所であっても、実際行ってみると想像以上に小さくこじんまりしていて、超リラックスモード溢れる空間であることが多いです。あえて言えば大学の部活の部室みたい。80年代以降の大型商業スタジオの「ザ・お仕事!」的なイメージと大きく異なります。
最強のマッスル・ショールズ・リズム・セクション「スワンパーズ」がファンキーにバックを支え、ここを拠点に数々の有名ヒット曲を世界中に送り出したことを考えるとそのギャップに驚いたりもしますが、逆に「あの名盤の、あの音の感触や空気感がこの空間に由来するんだな」と思ったりもします。
解説してくれたエンジニアに、コンソールやマイク、アウトボードについていくつか質問しましたが、現在では割とお馴染みの製品が使われていました。超ビンテージばかりを勝手に想像してた僕ですが、テープしゃなくてProToolsでした。当たり前ですが、、笑
僕がFAMEで筆頭に思い起こすのはこの曲。この曲が収録されているアレサ・フランクリンのアルバム「貴方だけを愛して」に参加するダン・ペンとスプーナー・オールダムは、大好きなマッスル・ショールズミュージシャンです。

もう一つの聖地。ジャクソン・ハイウェイ3614番地で有名な「マッスル・ショールズ・サウンド・スタジオ」は翌日行ったので、また後日書きます。
In the summer of 2017, I drove south from Nashville. Along the way, I was pulled over for speeding, but there were no “Put your hands on the car!” moments. However, I was asked to step out of the car and got a good scolding from the officer. After about two and a half hours, I arrived at the holy land of Southern soul and swamp rock, Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
It’s a small town. It’s rural.
First stop, one of the holy sites, FAME Studio. Being in a foreign land, I often get lost even with GPS, but as I drove along Highway 72, the building came into view, making it easy to find. I was able to tour the inside of the studio.
The documentary “Muscle Shoals,” depicting the history of FAME Studio and its owner Rick Hall, which I watched on the plane to hype myself up, was quite fascinating.
It’s a common experience with old independent studios in America, but even though places like this are now called “legendary studios,” when you actually visit them, they’re often smaller and cozier than you imagine, with a super relaxed vibe. If I were to dare compare, it’s like a university club room. It’s quite different from the image of big commercial studios as seen since the 1980s.
Considering that the legendary Muscle Shoals rhythm section, “The Swampers,” provided funky backing here and sent out numerous famous hit songs worldwide from this base, it’s surprising to see the contrast, but at the same time, it makes you think, “So that feeling and atmosphere of those classic albums and sounds originated from this space.”
I asked the engineer who explained things about the console, microphones, and outboard gear, but it turned out that fairly familiar products are used nowadays. I had imagined it would be all vintage, but it was ProTools instead of tape. It’s obvious, but still funny.
What I recall foremost at FAME is this song. Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, who contribute to the album “I Never Loved a Man(the Way I Love You)” by Aretha Franklin, are my favorite Muscle Shoals musicians.

Another holy site. I’ll write about the famous “Muscle Shoals Sound Studio” at 3614 Jackson Highway on another day since I visited it the following day.
