Lou Reed has a song called “Coney Island Baby,” and I’d always wanted to visit Coney Island because of it. I took the subway from Manhattan, which took about an hour. The train eventually came above ground, and when I arrived, there was this amusement park right by the ocean. It was around this time of year, toward the end of summer. There weren’t many people around. The place was gritty, a little dirty, and wonderfully rough around the edges. Back then, there was a movement called slowcore and sadcore, and they were an important band to me. When I played at South by SXSW in Austin in 2002, there was also a showcase by the New York label Tiger Style Records, so I was hoping I might get to see Ida live—but unfortunately they weren’t on the bill. Luckily, not long after that, Daniel Littleton and Tara Jane O'Neil came to Japan.
