It all began in 1997, when a single letter arrived at my home in Tokyo from Sean at Philadelphia’s Fuzzy Box Records. Sadly, Sean is no longer with us, but that letter changed everything.

If I had never met Sean—or James and Chandra at Darla Records—my musical journey might have taken a completely different path.

I’m honestly amazed that, even after all these years, I still regularly receive messages and inquiries about this record. This reissue became a reality thanks to James, who first suggested bringing it back. Thank you so much, James.

The fact that I’m still making new music today, and that people around the world continue to discover and listen to it, is something I owe in large part to them. I feel incredibly fortunate.

For this reissue, I was invited to look back on those days and write about what this album means to me now, 28 years later. That new text has been included as part of the artwork.

From the liner notes

Sure, the internet existed back in the mid ’90s, but it was far from the all-purpose tool that can instantly access music around the world as we know it today. For me, living in Tokyo back then, releasing my music through cool indie labels in the US or the UK felt like a huge dream. Honestly, a pretty unrealistic one.

Almost 28 years ago, I received a letter from Sean asking if I’d be interested in releasing something on Fuzzy Box. By coincidence, I had just bought a Flowchart record at Rough Trade in Tokyo the day before, so it genuinely felt like a miracle. That moment was a major turning point in my musical life. I am incredibly grateful to Sean O’Neal of Fuzzy Box Records and to James Agren of Darla Records for opportunity they gave me.

The first COLOR FILTER album you’re holding in your hands was released in 1998. It’s music I made 28 years ago. It’s naïve, painfully youthful, and honestly, I don’t quite have the courage to sit down and listen to it calmly now. It feels a bit like when my nephew sends me a link saying, “Uncle, I made some music—check it out!” You know it’s clumsy, but because of that connection, there’s something strangely compelling about it. That’s how this album feels to me.

Now, thanks to the internet, I often get to hear from fans all over the world… someone in Houston who started making music after hearing mine, or a young person in Russia sending artwork inspired by my songs. Knowing that this music continues to resonate with younger generations truly makes me happy. I hope this reissue helps even more people discover it.
