かの香織さんの超名曲「午前2時のエンジェル」
COLOR FILTERの1stアルバム制作時、つたない技術ながらも、僕の頭の中の構想だけは壮大で(!!)「1967年 サマーオブラブ、あの時代の音楽の空気感を、サンプラーとギターを使って1995年のサウンドで構築する」というアイデアに取り憑かれていました。
それまでは、ポストパンク、ニューウェイブ、インディーロックといった音楽が僕の影響の中心を成していて、当然のごとくギターを選び、そういったバンドを取り憑かれたように聞いてましたが、88〜89年以降、空気感がとても早いスピードで変わっていくのを感じ、ギターサウンドを置き換えるようにして、ブレークビーツ、アンビエント、テクノ、ハウスといった刺激的なキーワードが僕の関心を占めるように。毎週通う宇田川町では、何かしら新しい音楽に出会えるといったワクワク感に満ちていました。
その頃、サンプラーは手に届く価格にはなっていましたが、それでもまだ高く、でも僕にはどうしてもサンプラーを手にする必然性があり、AKAIのサンプラーとマッキントッシュを買いました。あと、忘れていけないのは屋敷豪太さんのビートサンプルCD-ROM。1stアルバムのドラムは全て屋敷豪太さんのサンプルです。マッシヴ・アタック/ネリーフーパーのビートプロダクションが念頭にありました。
ちょうどその頃聞いた「午前2時のエンジェル」。かのさんの書くメロディ/歌詞、透明感溢れながらも芯がある力強い歌声。当時好きだったエリザベス・フレーザー、ウェンディ・スミス、レイチェル・ゴスウェルといった女性ボーカリストに並ぶフェイバリットな歌声です。それを支えるチルなシンセ、リバーブ感、歌心感じさせる躍動溢れるフィルイン。あまり邦楽を聞く習慣がなかった僕ですが、イギリスから届く新しい12インチと同じようなサウンドプロダクションにやられました。
加えて、ギターソロ(鈴木茂さん？)明けに歌われる「星の数、それ以上〜」という一節。目の前に無数の星が広がり、楽曲の浮遊感と相まって、この曲が日本語で歌われるべき意義を感じた瞬間でした。
新しい宝物を見つけたような感じがして、それ以降すっかりかのさんのファンになりました。ただ、僕はこの曲を「ラブソング」として受け取ってないので、かのさんファンの多くの方とは全く違った聞き方かもしれません(笑)、、、🙂

“2AM Angel” – the timeless masterpiece by CAOLI CANO
When I was working on COLOR FILTER’s first album, my technical skills were still pretty limited, but I had this huge vision in my head (!!). I was obsessed with the idea of “recreating the atmosphere of 1967’s Summer of Love using samplers and guitars, but with the sound of 1995.”
Up until then, my musical influences had mostly come from post-punk, new wave, and indie rock. Naturally, I chose guitar as my main instrument, and I was obsessed with bands in those genres. But around ’88 or ’89, I started to sense a rapid shift in the musical atmosphere. As I gradually moved away from guitar-driven sounds, I found myself captivated by breakbeats, ambient, techno, and house—new and exciting keywords that began to take over my interests. Every week in Udagawacho, I’d feel that thrill of discovering some new sound.
At the time, samplers were becoming somewhat more affordable, but they were still expensive. Even so, I felt an absolute need to own one, so I bought an AKAI sampler and a Macintosh computer. And I can’t forget Goto Yashiki’s beat sample CD-ROM—the drums on our first album were entirely built from his samples. In my mind, I was aiming for the kind of beat production you’d hear from Massive Attack or Nellee Hooper.
It was right around then that I first heard “2AM Angel.” Kaori’s melodies and lyrics, her voice—so transparent and pure, yet strong and grounded—hit me hard. She immediately became one of my favorite vocalists, alongside singers I was really into at the time like Elizabeth Fraser, Wendy Smith, and Rachel Goswell. The chill synths, the lush reverb, and those emotionally-charged, energetic fills supporting her voice—it was all so musical. I didn’t normally listen to much Japanese music, but this production quality was on par with the fresh 12-inches arriving from the UK. I was blown away.
And then there’s that line, sung just after the guitar solo (by Shigeru Suzuki, maybe?):
“More than the stars…”
In that moment, I could see countless stars spread out before me. It was a perfect match with the floating, weightless atmosphere of the song, and I felt deeply that this song needed to be sung in Japanese.
It felt like discovering a new treasure. From that moment on, I was completely drawn to Kaori’s music. That said, I don’t personally take this song as a love song, so the way I hear it might be very different from how most of her fans do…🙂
